Pegasus, a winged horse in Greek mythology, was the offspring of Poseidon, in his role as the god of horses, and the Gorgon Medusa. The Greek hero Bellerophon captured Pegasus near the fountain Peirene, with assistance from Athena and Poseidon. Pegasus then enabled Bellerophon to ride him into battle and defeat the monster Chimera.
